Tyrann Devine Mathieu (; born May 13, ) is an American professional footballsafety for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the LSU Tigers. In college he developed a reputation for causing turnovers, setting a Southeastern Conference (SEC) record with 11 career forced fumbles and earning the nickname "the Honey Badger" after the mammal of the same name. In his sophomore season, he was recognized as a consensus All-American, won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the best defensive player in college football, and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Mathieu was dismissed from the LSU football program after that season due to a violation of team rules.
After spending a year out of football in , he was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round of the NFL draft, reuniting him in the defensive backfield with former college teammate Patrick Peterson. As a rookie he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team and has since earned three invitations to the Pro Bowl and has been named to the first-team All-Pro team three times. Mathieu’s turnaround is inspirational
In , I remember writing a column for this newspaper about then-LSU football player Tyrann Mathieu.
It was a sad and disappointing moment for Mathieu, who was coming off a sensational college football season where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist as a defensive back for the Tigers.
At the time, he was dismissed from the LSU football team for a violation of team rules. He was also arrested for charges simple possession of marijuana.
I remember thinking Mathieu, a New Orleans native and former St. Augustine High player, was incredibly talented as a football player, but he was on verge of ruining what could’ve been an amazing career as a college football and NFL player.
He hit rock bottom as an athlete and a young man. He needed to get back on the right path before it was too late.

Since those setbacks in , Mathieu has completely turned his life around.
He had several setbacks along the way with several injuries and spent times with various teams in the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.
But he didn’t give up.
He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs before the season, looking for a team that not only wanted to sign him but actually believed in him.
