    Days before his death, Wallace Smith Broecker, the “grandfather” of climate science, urged his colleagues to deploy a solar shield in a last-ditch effort to combat global warming.

    In a video taped in mid-February, the ailing scientist, who spent more than 50 years at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, had a message for 40 of the world’s top climate researchers: Humanity isn’t moving fast enough to stave off the disastrous effects of climate change created by carbon dioxide production, so the time had come to seriously consider more extreme solutions such as a massive solar shield in the Earth’s atmosphere, a tactic frequently referred to as “geo-engineering.”

    Brocker’s message was delivered to researchers attending a conference centered on untested solutions to climate change at the first Planetary Management Symposium on Climate Engineering at Arizona State University.
