Annihilation of Caste: The Annotated Critical Edition, edited by S. Anand (Verso, 2016) and with an Introduction ‘The Doctor and the Saint’ by Arundhati Roy, is based on a speech by Dr. B.R. Ambedakar who took up the anti-caste struggles for the Untouchables in India. S. Anand’s work with thoroughly researched annotations alongside the speech and introduction by Arundhati Roy makes this a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand India, its society, politics and the caste system. This landmark speech by Dr. B.R. Ambedakar is the pinnacle of his scholarly work and cements his legacy alongside Mahatma Gandhi in Indian politics. In this speech, Dr. B.R. He argues that Indian society and culture that preaches the spirituality to the world cannot provide liberty, equality, and fraternity until she completely annihilates the caste by eradicating the Vedas, Shastras and their teachings. In this engaging conversation between an Untouchable - Mahendra Kutare

Imperial Politics and Dominant Ideologies: The Origin, Development, and Future of Nationalist Movements

This article proposes a new understanding of the development of nationalist movements, the nature of nationalist ideology, and the forces leading to the global prevalence of the nation-state. In comparison with previous scholarship, my argument contains two new features. First, I argue that, while nationalist movements and nation-states are products of the modern era, their ideological origins can be traced back to Judeo-Christian teachings. Second, I stress that nationalism is not the graveyard of empires. Instead, the geopolitics of empires has consistently played a key role in shaping the formation and spread of nationalist movements and the nation-state political model.

The worldwide dominance of the nation-state after World War II resulted from a combination of imperial politics and the prevailing ideologies of the era. These shaped not only the origin and development of nationalist movements, but also the very nature of nationalist movements across different contexts.

There are two related points in my theory: (1) National identity is a form of identification. Yet, except for identifications formed through direct human interactions, such as fa
