Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum Higashiyama Kaii GalleryTerm V Quiet Enjoyment
The annual theme for the fiscal year 2016 is "My Personal History" (Watashi no Rirekisho). "My Personal History" is a famous column published on the last page of the Nikkei newspaper where former prime ministers and prominent figures of various fields write serial articles. Kaii Higashiyama also wrote the column in 1965, when he was 57 years old. Higashiyama, who assumed the post of the board chairperson of the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) in the same year, was reaching a ripe stage as a painter. Through his "My Personal History" articles in which he reviewed his own life up to the age of 57, this year the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery will introduce the episodes and other details for each article. Term V entitled "Quiet Enjoyment" takes up a period of his life when Higashiyama traveled through the Nordic countries with his wife to replenish themes for his artworks after becoming increasingly busy everyday as the "national painter". In addition to the studies and <Quiet Town> depicting the Nordic landscapes painted in the countries, the exhibition will include his representative works such as <Landscape with a White Horse (Study)>

And it really is ‘heavy’ with shipbuilding and LPG processing taking place.
