Chapter Two. Notes for a Phenomenology of virtual movement
The category of apparent movement in architectural critic has recent origins. They can be traced in the Eighteenth Century's academic debate between composition and character: the former enhances the value of a building that turns out to be organized according to geometric and distributive criteria, the latter defines the value by the effect that a building produces on the observer. At that time architecture begins to find its aesthetic reason as an expression of resistance to the gravitational force. Wölfflin develops his empathic theory of architecture: it's based on the visibility and judgment that a man assigns to objects and space, not only in relationship but also in analogy with his own body and psyche. Brentano consolidates the phenomenological current to reach its climax in the socalled Gestatheorie or Theory of Form.
