Freelan Oscar Stanley (June 1, – October 2, ) was an American inventor, entrepreneur, hotelier, and architect. He made his fortune in the manufacture of photographic plates but is best remembered as the co-founder, with his brother Francis Edgar Stanley, of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company which built steam-powered automobiles until He also built and operated the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.[1]

Early life
[change | change source]Freelan O. Stanley and his twin brother Francis E. Stanley were born on 1 June in Kingsfield, Maine.[1] Their parents were Solomon and Apphia (French) Stanley. Solomon Stanley was both a farmer and a teacher.[1] Freelan and his brother Francis graduated from Farmington State Normal School in Farmington, Maine.[2] The school is now the University of Maine at Farmington.[3] Freelan became a teacher and taught at Andover, Lisbon and Farmington, Maine.[4] He later became principal of the high school at Mechanic Falls, Maine.[4] In he met and married Flora Tileston.[2]
