  • ‘Airline Highway’ will bring a New Orleans-styled celebration of life to Fullerton College

    Fullerton College Theatre Arts Department welcomes all to its newest production “Airline Highway,” a play written by Lisa D’Amour and directed by Candice Clasby.

    The play will premiere Thursday, May 10, in the Bronwyn Dodson Theatre.

    “Airline Highway” is an American play that made its Broadway debut back in April 2015.

    “A cast of 20 Fullerton College students take on this difficult piece of theatre bringing new life and heart to the words written by Lisa D’Amour,” Clasby said .

    The play takes place in the parking lot of the Hummingbird Motel near New Orleans.

    The hotel’s residents have gathered to celebrate the life of a burlesque queen named Miss Ruby, who decides she wants to have her funeral while she is still alive so she can celebrate among her loved ones. The audience gets a better glimpse at the characters as the night and celebrations unfold.

    “I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such a talented and giving group of artists. They are really digging deep and bringing heart to the playwrights words,” Clasby said referring to the students performing in the play.

    New Orleans' Underbelly

    Lisa D’Amour’s play introduces us to people tossed aside by life but who have found something resembling family at the Hummingbird Hotel, a wreck of a place that early on we know is doomed, as the area is undergoing gentrification witnessed by the building of a new Costco nearby. It features a large cast of failures, from the affable hotel manager, to the down and out prostitute, to the transgender performer, the burned out poet, the guy who got out (with the best show more name, Bait Boy), and the matriarch of the place, the dying former burlesque queen, Miss Ruby.

    The play progresses through a day and it’s a monumental one as Hummingbird occupants, in love and gratitude to Ruby, are granting her wish and putting on a funeral party (Act II) for her, as she wanted in advance of her death while she could enjoy it (though she is enfeebled to the point of confinement to a concocted wheelchair and the ravages of dementia).
